Coupar Angus Pride of Place

Coupar Angus Pride of Place was formed in 2006 and, as the group's name suggests, our main objective is to restore pride in the town of Coupar Angus through environmental improvements and by uniting the community through support for social activities.  We work closely with local businesses, other voluntary groups and organisations, Perth and Kinross Council and members of the local community on environmental activities and projects that benefit our town.

With the excellent support and involvement of the local community, Pride of Place has really made a difference to the town.  Our environmental improvement initiatives have complemented the built environment regeneration works taking place in the town centre and this has been recognised in the number of awards by the community has won over the past three years.

The past year has seen Pride of Place build on these successes by continuing to engage with the community and young people through projects such as the provision of free, re-usable cotton bags; our first community litter pick; the development of a “bug hotel” in the school garden; the donation of gardening tools to the Guides and by assisting the Council with the establishment of a Community Orchard in the Larghan Park.

We were delighted that our work with school children over the past two years has helped the school to achieve Eco-School Green Flag status.  We are equally delighted that our joint efforts with Perth and Kinross Council, in further developing Larghan Park, has resulted in the prestigious Green Flag Award for public parks being retained in 2010.

As a group we also continue to enhance our town with spring and summer floral displays.  More than fifty hanging baskets and numerous tubs and containers complement those provided by the local authority in the summer months.

Here are just some of our achievements:

September 2007- September 2008: Pride of Place won the award for “Best Community Involvement” for two years running in the Take a Pride in Perthshire Competition and also Silver Gilt and "Most Improved Community" awards in 2008. The lead organisation was Pride of Place with the excellent support and involvement of the local community

2008 & 2009: Larghan Park redeveloped/refurbished – wildflower area; circular footpath; play area; bulb planting; tree planting; successful Grand Opening Event. The lead organisation was P&K Council funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Gannochy Trust & P&K Council with the local community involved in the redevelopment work.

July 2009: Green Flag Awarded to Larghan Park following its refurbishment.

September 2009: Pride of Place won Gold Award in the annual Take a Pride in Perthshire competition; also won award for "Best Involvement with Schools". The lead organisation was Pride of Place who won the prestigious Gold Award for the first time. We also developed a vegetable garden and a sensory garden in the grounds of the Primary School.

October 2009: Pride of Place received the "Best Work with Children and Schools" award in the annual "Perthshire Positive Action Awards". The lead organisation was Pride of Place who won another prestigious award in recognition of PoP’s work with both the local Primary School and the Girl Guides.

January 2010: Coupar Angus Primary School achieved Eco-School Green Flag status for environmental excellence. The lead organisation was the Primary School. It was a hard earned and well deserved award – the successful partnership with Pride of Place was highlighted by assessors.

Whilst delighted that our efforts have been recognised in this way, a very important important aspect of what we do is simply having fun together whilst enhancing our town.  Be it organising sell-out family ceilidhs or our successful Plant Sale, participating in various local events or planting up our hanging baskets, members and friends enjoy working together and take pleasure in making Coupar Angus a better place in which to live and work, and to visit.
