Blair in Bloom represents the communities of Blairgowrie & Rattray. It has a dedicated committee of ten which is helped by a variety of groups and volunteers who contribute many hours and much hard work throughout the year to ensure that the town looks as good as it possibly can. We are very lucky that our town has a green space called the Wellmeadow and the beautiful River Ericht flowing through it.
We raise all our annual planting from plugs which we keep in a heated polytunnel and we fill and sell hanging baskets to raise funds. Every year we are really heartened by the support we get from local businesses who buy our hanging baskets (one hundred sold this year) and who help us with our projects. Volunteers, especially The Trefoil Guild, are very helpful and always willing to plant, deadhead and weed. The youth club, nursery schools and school Eco Clubs are enthusiastic supporters, helping us out with planting beds and tubs in the town. We also work closely with The Environment Service at Perth & Kinross Council to ensure the town is well cared for, clean and free from litter.
We have completed several projects: spring bulbs were planted throughout the town; flower filled carts have been put in our gardens at Westfield, Rattray and Rosemount; and Coronation Corner, adjacent to the Wellmeadow, has been revamped. Our "big"' project for 2010/2011 is "Meeting Point". This is a derelict site in Croft Lane, next to the re-cycling point in the centre of town and has been offered to us by Perth and Kinross Council who have supported our work. We plan to create a community garden with new seating and planting in raised beds. We are working in partnership with local youth group Strathmore Centre for Youth Development and young volunteers from the group will create a unique art work on the specially designed art wall which is part of the garden. We hope that this new garden will become a place for young and old alike to enjoy together and will help to improve the environment in this part of town.
We have more projects planned which will, no doubt, bring challenges but we are all involved because we want to have a town that everyone can be proud to live in - we hope you will visit us soon!
