Milnathort

Milnathort in Bloom was founded in 2000 in an effort to improve the appearance of our village and to raise community spirit. Our committee has representatives from the Community Council, the Parish church and local youth groups and our local Perth & Kinross councillor is also a member.

We started off by hanging about twenty four baskets in the village and planting up two flower beds - all watered by volunteers. Now we have fifteen tubs, fifty baskets, one farm cart, four four flower beds and an ornamental planter - so we have progressed to watering the plants with a converted golf cart!  And we are pleased that we have more than doubled our list of watering volunteers. Every year we also bring on from seeds and plugs about 80% of our plants. The group is keen to ensure they are leading by example and so, for example, we ensure that compost is re-cycled and and used in flower beds.  All the old plants are composted at the end of the season.

We work hard to ensure that the village is kept litter free and carry out regular litter picking and village "clean-ups".  Last year we transformed a litter strewn area into a rose bed which has greatly improved this part of the village. We commissioned an ornamental hanging basket stand which now stands outside the Town Hall and also created flower beds at the southern entrance to the village. We are currently working on a village gateway design for the western approach.  Refurbishment work has also been carried out on the old school bell which was taken down, shot blasted, painted and re-hung.

We are very fortunate that we are supported by many businesses in the village as well as many individual contributors and to date we are pleased to say that we have always had sufficient funds to cover our programmes of work.

Each year, Milnathort enters the Take a Pride in Perthshire and Kinross-shire Best Kept Village competitions and has had success in both.
