Kirkmichael

Kirkmichael is situated on the A924 between Blairgowrie and Pitlochry nestled near the centre of Strathardle and surrounded by magnificent scenery. Kirkmichael in Bloom was estabished because a few of our local residents became concerned about the appearance of the village with some buildings empty and beginning to look in disrepair. It was more and more the case that traffic and tourists were driving straight through, with no incentive to stop.  We have been planting flowers in tubs etc for about four years, but in 2009 we decided to become more active.

We have a core group of about six volunteers - but we are working on attracting more members!  The main way we can measure progress is the reaction of local residents, businesses and tourists and we are pleased to report that all of them have been very positive. We were also very encouraged by our success in the 2009 Take a Pride in Perthshire Competition in which we received two awards including 1st in the '"Best New Entry" category.

Last year we concentrated our efforts on the centre of the village and this year we hope to repeat this and also to mark the entrances to the village with the introduction of benches and flower displays.

Younger folk in the community are also keen to get involved:the Brownies have a litter picking up evening and they plan to planti sun flowers around the local village hall. The village school now has a green house so pupils will aslo be able to help!

We raisie funds for our activities in a number of ways. For example we held a “Body Shop Party” at the local pub - it was well attended and we raised £250. The local village donated £43.08 collected from their Christmas card delivery service.

Kirkmichael is a lovely little community and we want to make it a colourful one too!

A joint website has been created for all groups in the Glen and we are delighted to have been invited to be part of it as well; this will enable us to let a far wider range of folk to know what we are up to.  To find out more about Kirkmichael in Bloom or to get involved please contact us at www.theglens.org.uk/ or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
